A New Lift for a Manhattan Brownstone - Bob Vila's Home Again on the Upper West Side of New York to renovate a nineteenth-century Brownstone. Brownstones defined the neighborhoods of New York society in the 1890s. But time has touched these properties -- front stoops are gone, casement windows mar the faŤade, steel staircases have replaced wrought iron, and drop ceilings have been added throughout. The goal of this project will be to reclaim the graciousness of the space, open it up, allow light to enter, and recreate a living space that is contemporary and highly detailed. Demolition is underway and salvage has begun. Brian O'Keefe, architect for the project, explains that the plaster walls and drop ceilings will be removed completely as the space is gutted to the original exterior walls in preparation for the new studs, plumbing, and floors. Bob visits nearby Central Park and the Central Park Conservancy, the largest stand of American elms in the country, and historic Bethesda Terrace.
